Funding and Financial Assistance FAQ


  1. What is student support?

    a)  What is full funding?

In the DLSPH, each full-time domestic PhD student will receive $15,000 plus value of tuition for the first 5 years of a PhD program. For 2011-12 this amounts to $23,045.  For full details, please review our Full Funding Policy.

b)  What is considered student support?

  • Awards from external agencies such as SSHRC, NSERC, OGS, CIHR, etc.
  • Internal awards such as UTO, OGSST, Connaught, some OSOTFs
  • Government, International Agency and other awards for the express purpose of education
  • Stipends from supervisors and training grants to support your program (T4A Income)
  • Employer financial/tuition support

c) What is not student support?

  • Teaching Assistantship (in the Faculty of Medicine)
  • Research jobs not related to the academic program
  • Casual jobs in the university
  • Casual jobs outside of the university

d) Are there any terms or conditions for holding awards?

  • Students must be registered as a full-time degree candidate for a minimum of fourteen weeks in any term during which they hold an award.  Repayment of an award is required if a student is in full-time attendance fewer than 14 weeks in any term, transfers to another graduate unit, changes to part-time status or withdraws from the program.
  • All PhD students (and their supervisors) are required to complete an annual academic Progress Review and confirm "satisfactory academic progress".
  • PhD students in the funded cohort are required to complete an annual Funding Report.  Any changes to this funding agreement must be reported to the Graduate Office in writing.
  1. What kinds of financial support are available to Masters students?
  • MPH* degree students are often paid by their employer/supervisor for practicum work.
  • Some of the external granting agencies will provide 1 or 2 years of funding for MSc degree students.
  • Both MSc and MPH* degree students are eligible for OGS.
  • Some supervisors may support/or provide employment for master's students. 
  • Master's students can apply for bursaries and OSAP/UTAPS.
  1. What is an OSOTF?
  • An OSOTF is a need-based bursary.  The School has 8 of these.  Applications are available in spring, and will be advertised on the website. Generally, these small OSOTF awards may be held in conjunction with other awards.
  • There are also OSOTF awards available through supervisors associated with research institutes in the major hospitals.  These awards generally exceed $18,000.  These awards are student support under the full funding policy.
  • Recipients of large OSOTF awards are not considered eligible for other U of T based internal awards.
  • Recipients and their supervisors are required to notify the Graduate Office about these awards.
  1. What is OSAP / UTAPS ?
  • This is an Ontario government combined loan and/or bursary program.

  1. What are bursaries?
  • Bursaries are available to a full-time students in financial need from the SGS. Pick up the forms in the Graduate Office and discuss your eligibility with the Graduate Affairs Administrator.
  1.  Are part-time or flex-time students eligible for awards or bursaries?
  • Generally, no.
  • Part-time students are eligible for some OSOTFs.
  • Part-time/flex-time students with an outstanding academic record may receive a token award, depending on availability of funds.
  • Some external granting agencies make awards to flex- time students.
  1. How do I find out about awards?
  • We send out all award notices by Email, and post them on the DLSPH website.
  1. Can I have more than one award at a time?
  • Generally, no.
  • Some award agencies permit students to hold other awards worth between $5,000 - $10,000. This is OK if both are external to U of T.
  • The School encourages students to accept external awards first. Sometimes these are topped up. You cannot hold a full UTO with any other external or internal award.
  • You must provide the Graduate Office with a copy of the award letter showing the amount, source and duration of other rewards which you receive.
  1. Does the award go to me or is it used to pay my fees?
  • If you owe university tuition fees, UTO funds and any other SGS-administered awards will be applied to your balance owing.
  • External awards go directly to you and you are expected to pay the appropriate University tuition fees.
  1. Who decides on the awards?
  • There is a standing committee, consisting of the Graduate Coordinator, Graduate Affairs Administrator, an Administrative Assistant plus 2-3 other faculty, which reviews all award applications.
  1. I’ve already applied for three awards this year: do I need to do more?
  • Yes. Apply, apply, and apply. Believe it or not, there are some awards which remain unused.
  1. What if I have support from my supervisor?
  • A number of students will receive a student stipend from their supervisor. The amount and duration of this will vary for each individual. In some cases the supervisor will be able to provide “full funding”, in other cases the stipend may be supplemented with awards from other sources.
  • Supervisors are expected to incorporate student stipends into their grant proposals, as appropriate.
