Global Health Focus for Master Students


PLEASE NOTE: The Global Health Focus is not a stand-alone program.  Students need to be accepted to, or already studying in, one of the approved DLSPH Masters degree specializations (see table below) before they are able to be considered to for the Global Health Focus.

Core Competencies

A public health practitioner, policy maker or researcher in global health will:

  • Understand the political economy of global health issues.

  • Bring a determinants-of-health and population health perspective to problem analysis, policy development and project design.

  • Be cognizant of the linkages between local and global health problems.

  • Work within the mandates, roles and approaches of international organizations.

  • Build coalitions and work in partnership with the NGO sector and local community organizations.

  • Be sensitive to cultural differences and adapt methods to local contexts.

  • Apply appropriate ethical approaches to international, country level and local projects.

  • Understand broad ethical issues as they relate to equity globally.

 

Admission

  • Prospective students are required to first apply to a core masters program (Biostatistics, Community Nutrition, Epidemiology, Health Promotion, and Occupational & Environmental Health) Click here for information regarding the application process for core masters programs.
  • In order to be considered for the Global Health Focus, we would ask that you emphasize your global health experience and interests in your statement of intent, reference letters and/or CV for your core masters program.
  • Students who have been accepted into a core masters program will then have their application material reviewed again for the Global Health Focus
 

Requirements

Students in the Masters Global Health Focus will need to complete the following requirements:

  • Required courses in their core matters program (see below)
  • Plus:
    • One core course in Global Health (CHL5700H)
    • At least one elective course in global health chosen from the list below
    • One practicum placement in an international setting or with a Canadian organization engaged with global health issues.
