PhD Social Science and Health (SSH)Supervision Students are assigned a supervisor at the time of admission to the program based on their main area of interest. PhD students must be supervised by a faculty member who has an appointment with Public Health Sciences and Full School of Graduate Studies (SGS) status. Faculty other than the core Social Science and Health faculty may be eligible to supervise with the approval of the Program Director and Graduate Coordinator. Students wishing to change supervisors should discuss this with their supervisor and Program Director. Students take responsibility for contacting supervisors, arranging meetings, setting agenda for committee meetings and taking minutes of the discussion. A copy of the minutes is provided to the supervisor and other committee members. Students have the right to appropriate assistance and guidance from their supervisors. Supervisors have individual styles of supervision and students have differing needs and expectations regarding supervision. Supervisors and students are required to meet on a regular basis throughout the program to discuss academic, financial and personal matters related to the student’s progress. It is a requirement of the university and the Department of Public Health Sciences that all students and supervisors complete an annual progress review and a funding agreement.
